Rafting the Colorado with Theoretical Blonde

Back for a third year! Salt Lake City’s own Theoretical Blonde is joining us for another unforgettable Colorado River rafting trip through Westwater Canyon. This five-piece, bluegrass-adjacent band brings a sound that’s equal parts familiar and unexpected, blending bluegrass, jazz, Americana, country, jam-band grooves, and singer-songwriter soul into one lively, toe-tapping mix.

And trust us: there’s something pretty special about hearing live music echo through a wild canyon.

Westwater already has all the makings of an incredible getaway: thrilling whitewater, towering canyon walls, beautiful riverside camps, and adventurous hikes to places you’d never find on your own. Now, imagine topping off those days with live music, good company, favorite covers, and heartfelt originals under the wide-open canyon sky.

Big rapids. Beautiful camps. Live music. No ordinary vacation.

Come for the whitewater. Stay for the music. Leave with stories you’ll be telling for years.

Music river rafting trips; band profile pictureAbout the band:

At the heart of Theoretical Blonde is a group of best friends who’ve forged a deep connection both on stage and off. It’s this camaraderie that brings something special to the music. The moments of unspoken telepathy during their live shows—the way they anticipate each other’s next move—create an energy that’s impossible to fake. The band’s vibe is one of effortless collaboration, where the chemistry between the members elevates everything they play, making even the most complex arrangements feel natural and unforced. They are world-builders.

The Colorado River through Westwater Canyon flows through the traditional homeland of the Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) people. While we are out here enjoying these magical places, it’s important to understand this legacy of displacement. Holiday acknowledges and respects the long history of these traditional inhabitants. We appreciate our own long-standing relationship with the modern-day tribe. Learn more about our land acknowledgments here.

Itinerary

From the Colorado River’s meeting in Loma, the river winds its way west toward the Utah border and the rugged red-rock landscapes of the Colorado Plateau. Just west of the state line, the river plunges into Westwater Canyon, where towering sandstone walls close in and the whitewater comes alive. Navigate a thrilling series of rapids, including the legendary Skull Rapid, as the canyon twists through dramatic rock formations and narrow passages. Beyond the rapids, the canyon opens up, delivering you to the Westwater boat ramp, our take-out point, with plenty of memories from an unforgettable stretch of the Colorado River.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1

Meet at our headquarters in Green River, Utah at 8:00 a.m., Mountain Time. We’ll head east to Loma, Colorado, where our Colorado River adventure begins. After meeting your guides and getting acquainted with the rafts, inflatable kayaks, and paddleboards, we’ll launch into the scenic waters of Ruby Canyon. Towering sandstone walls, peaceful stretches of river, and opportunities to explore invite us to slow down and settle into river life. We’ll find a beautiful riverside campsite, enjoy a delicious dinner, and gather for our first evening of live music with Theoretical Blonde. There’s no better way to kick off a canyon getaway than with good food, great company, and tunes beneath the desert sky.

Day 2

Wake up to the sounds of the river and a hearty breakfast before continuing downstream through Ruby and Horsethief Canyons. Today is all about soaking it in. Paddle, swim, explore a side canyon, or simply kick back and enjoy the spectacular scenery as the river winds through the desert landscape. We’ll make time for riverside lunch and opportunities to discover the canyon’s hidden corners before settling into camp for another memorable evening. As the sun slips behind the canyon walls, Theoretical Blonde returns for another live performance, bringing their bluegrass-adjacent sound to a spectacular riverside setting. Let the music play and the river do the rest.

Day 3

Today, the adventure takes a thrilling turn as we leave the calmer waters of Ruby behind and approach Westwater Canyon. After a peaceful morning on the river, we’ll reach the Westwater Ranger Station and prepare for the excitement ahead. The canyon narrows, the scenery changes, and the whitewater begins to build. We’ll navigate exciting rapids, including the legendary Skull Rapid, surrounded by dramatic black rock walls and rugged canyon scenery. After a full day on the water, we’ll settle into camp, share stories from the day, and enjoy another evening of live music with Theoretical Blonde. There’s nothing quite like reliving the day’s biggest splashes with a soundtrack echoing through the canyon.

Day 4

Rise and shine! There’s more Westwater whitewater waiting for us. After breakfast, we’ll pack up camp and head back onto the Colorado River for another day of thrilling rapids, incredible scenery, and unforgettable canyon moments. We’ll work our way through the remaining whitewater, taking in the towering walls and wild beauty of this remarkable stretch of river. After one final riverside lunch and a few last opportunities to soak up the adventure, we’ll reach our take-out at Cisco, Utah. We’ll say our goodbyes, swap favorite memories, and head home with sandy gear, happy hearts, and plenty of songs still stuck in our heads.

We aim to be at the Cisco boat ramp by 2:00. After loading boats and gear, we’ll make the 45-minute drive back to Green River. We typically return between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

Four days, countless memories, and one unforgettable river-and-music adventure.

Please keep in mind that this is a sample itinerary and may not be the exact trip you’ll experience. Westwater Canyon offers countless options, and each trip may feature different highlights. This is just one possible itinerary. Keep an open mind, be flexible, go with the flow, and enjoy!
