The Best of Moab: Mountain Bike Sampler

Holiday’s guides love the river, but they’re also fanatical mountain bikers! Located just outside of Moab, our Green River, Utah, warehouse is a perfect jumping-off point to ride the best of Moab mountain bike trails, and our guides spend their time off river exploring them all! Let us show you why Moab has become the West’s mountain bike Mecca.

This fully catered, fully supported mountain bike trip can be customized to cover a variety of terrain in and around Moab. Pedal scenic double-track roads or sample the single track that has made the former uranium boom town so famous. Swoop over massive, petrified sand dunes. Bike on an ancient mudflat alongside dinosaur tracks. You could also ride out to epic views of natural bridges, or along a ridge line overlooking Arches National Park.

The rich, red rocks and spectacular geology of the area make every ride a feast for the senses. Plan your trip in the spring to catch the wildflower season, or wait for autumn’s crisp nights for the best stargazing. Moab also offers fantastic forested mountain riding options in the La Sal Mountains just south of town.

With hundreds of miles of trails to chose from, Moab has something for riders of all abilities. And Holiday’s expert guides make the camping and logistics easy. Our 4×4 support van will carry all our gear and food, including the fixings for three gourmet meals a day. We’ll set up camp in locations convenient to the day’s rides, and plan each day according to your group’s interests and abilities. This is your trip—we’re here to help you make the most of it.

Itinerary

Moab, Utah: this small town in southwestern Utah has become synonymous with desert adventure. Just south of Arches National Park and the Colorado River, northeast of Canyonlands National Park, and nestled at the base of the La Sal Mountains, this town truly has it all.

Sample Itinerary

Please note: this fully customizable trip will have a different itinerary for each group. The following is meant to serve as an example of one possible four-day trip we could organize, depending on the time of year, weather, your group’s interests and abilities, and campsite availability.

Day 1:

Your trips begins at our headquarters in Green River, Utah at 7:00 a.m., Mountain Time. We’ll do introductions and give you time to get your gear organized and into our support van. Check out our store for any last-minute necessities (see our packing checklist for a list of items you can find at our store). Most important, before we go, our guides will perform a pre-trip inspection of your bikes. If you plan to ride your own bike, please make sure that it is in good repair. We recommend a complete service by a professional shop prior to the trip. If your bike does not pass our inspection we will ask you to rent a Holiday bike for $180.00/person.

Hop in our passenger van for the one-hour ride to Moab. Depending on your group, we might start with a ride at the Bar M trail network north of Moab. It’s a great spot to warm up, with several short beginner and intermediate single-track loops. Chicken Caesar salad wraps for lunch will refuel you for a bigger afternoon ride at the Klondike Bluffs trail network. Cruise through a field of agate and jasper or tackle a more technical climb to a ridge that overlooks Salt Valley in Arches National Park. We’ll set up camp on public land outside of town and spend the evening enjoying a well-earned meal and conversation around the campfire.

Day 2:

Want to sleep in? Great. Want to get up and at ’em? Either way, the day is yours to plan. Go for maximum technical riding on one of the trails in the Amasa Back network, or take it easy with a long, scenic, flowy ride through the slickrock dunes of Navajo Rocks. Eat lunch at the top of the Mag 7 trailhead, then cruise downhill to the Gemini Bridges, a matched set of natural bridges, a hundred feet above the valley floor. Keep on rolling downhill to an early camp, or do a couple loops around the Mag 7 or Navajo Rocks. Solar showers and appetizers are waiting for you back at camp.

Day 3:

Wake up to hot coffee and eggs cooked to order. Today we can return to Klondike Bluffs or Mag 7 and check out the trails we missed on the first pass, or we can hop in the passenger van for a shuttle up into the La Sal Mountains for some alpine riding. Cruise along two-track BLM roads through the aspen meadows on Polar Mesa. Camp in a grove of pines overlooking the red rocks of Moab far below.

Days 4–5:

Enjoy a leisurely start to the day before gearing up for the long descent out of the mountains. We’ll fly down off the plateau in a dizzying series of double-track switchbacks into Fisher Valley. We’ll eat one last trail-side lunch, then drop down the last several hundred feet of elevation, splashing through Onion Creek over two dozen times before finally reaching main road, right next to the Colorado River. From here, we’ll load up in the passenger van for the 90-minute drive back to Green River. We aim to be back at our warehouse by 4:00 p.m.

Please remember that this is only a sample itinerary. Your group may chose to explore other areas, or the weather may dictate that we spend more time in another. We invite you to embrace the expeditionary nature of a trip out in the wilderness!

The Moab Sampler mountain bike trip can cover a large variety of terrain. Riding could include double-track gravel roads or single track trails. Either of these could consist of packed dirt with gentle up and down sections; loose rocks and gravel; sand; ruts; winding or steep turns; technical ascents and descents, including ledges, exposure, or slickrock; and/or steep uphill and downhill sections.

Guides will select trails based on the interests and abilities of each group, but a good level of fitness will make the riding more enjoyable. Riders who have no previous off-road bicycling experience should be experienced road cyclists with good athletic ability. All riders should prepare for the trip by riding their bike on a regular basis prior to the trip.
