Borrowed from river culture, this retreat adopts the saying, “Go With The Flow”, for this facilitated journey of our senses with therapeutic movement and body-mind nourishment. In the crisp mornings we wake to the sounds of nature; the slow churn of the river, the whistle of the wind, and the songs of the birds. With coffee and tea warm in our hands we gather for our morning movement practice. Soft sand river banks, cushioned mats, straps and props will help us feel comfortable and successful as we check in with our bodies, clear the cobwebs from our minds and fill our souls with connection and heart. Our daily Pilates and therapeutic movement session, which is accessible to everyone and can be taken home with you, nourishes us in every way to prepare us for the adventures of the day. After a delicious breakfast together, we will set out on the river, soaking up the long Summer day with all of our senses. At the end of the day there is time to play in the water, sit still, read, write, paint, or cast a line out to the fish. River life offers us the opportunity to fully tap into our most basic needs and restore our nervous systems to a healthy balance of rest and digest. Join Eva Kauffman (master Pilates instructor) and Esther Smith (Doctor of Physical Therapy, Pilates Instructor and Nutritional Therapist) both from Salt Lake City, Utah on this personal and playful journey on the river.
Originally from the Midwest, Eva has lived in and enjoyed Utah for more than 30 years. She completed her Pilates training in 1997 and opened Streamline Pilates in 2000 where she continues to direct operations and develop her expansive teaching skills in both classes and private sessions. Over 20 years in the industry Eva continues to be an ambassador of the Pilates Method advocating internal awareness, optimal and natural body-mind alignment, intrinsic strength and coordination along with proper breathing. These habits are key to the balance we need to maintain and enjoy our busy lives and therefore are perfect to bring to a retreat setting. The corrective and therapeutic exercises along with a few self-treatment toys transfer nicely when we leave the studio and go on the road, or on the river. We are lucky to have this practice available to us, and it is a joy to share it with the community. Eva finds peace through meditation, journal writing. She blends the practice of yoga and Pilates to keep her body, mind, and zest for life in the best of health in order to continue to enjoy activities outside in the company of good friends and family.
Esther is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Pilates Instructor and Nutritional Therapist who has lived in Utah for 13 years. In 2014 Esther founded Grassroots Physical Therapy in Salt Lake City because she wanted to build a community network that bucks the conventional ideas of physical therapy delivery and celebrates wellness by giving people education and solutions to put health care decisions back in their hands. She views Pilates as the optimal strength building and therapeutic exercise modality. She is thrilled to offer this restorative exercise system in unconventional settings like on the banks of a wild river and other adventurous retreat locations. Outside of the work setting, Esther enjoys cooking up good food gathered from local producers, rock climbing in Utah’s wild places, and generally adventuring outside with friends and family.

Lodore Canyon sits in the center of Dinosaur National Monument, a region known for its striking scenic beauty, dinosaurs fossils & top-noch white water rafting. The journey follows the Green river southwards from North Western Colorado to North Eastern Utah, crossing the state boundary only after hitting the confluence of its sister canyon & the Yampa River.
One of the advantages of a river trip is the flexibility of the daily itinerary. It can vary widely from one trip to the next based on group desires, Mother Nature, and courtesy for other groups on the river. The typical itineraries below illustrate a 3-day and a 2-day trip through Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River.
SAMPLE 4-DAY ITINERARY
Day 1: Meet at our headquarters (7:00 a.m., Mountain Time), we will issue your waterproof bags. You can buy any last minute items from our accessories store at this time (see our packing checklist above for a list of items you can find at our store). We will then jump in the vans for a three-hour ride to the Gates of Lodore put-in. Then you can disconnect and reconnect with a different part of yourself in the Pilates adventure to come. Verdant scenery mixed in with historic rapids like Disaster Falls make a thrilling first impression. Camp in the red-beating heart of Lodore Canyon.
Day 2: Spend a relaxing morning stimulating your senses through focus & practice, & after fueling up with a hearty breakfast- transfer to boats as we navigate two serious white water rapids: Triplet Falls and Hells Half Mile. After passing through these thrills, take an afternoon hike up to a waterfall grotto or fine-tune your technique in some new Pilates positions.
Day 3: Now fully synced up with the river's rhythms, we move out of Lodore Canyon into Echo Park. This acoustic arena of varnished white sandstone slabs contains the confluence of the Green and Yampa River. After stilling your soul during this tranquil morning float, enter more rapids and aptly named Whirlpool Canyon where we will likely find camp and a pleasant 3-5 mile hike up Jone's Hole Side Canyon.
Day 4: Greet the sun with a full belly and a fourth day of physical and mental fine-tuning with our team of expert facilitators. Hop on the boats and encounter playful rapids perfectly mixed with serene flat-water to balance out your last day on the water. Finally finish of this mindful retreat with a volley of exiting rapids in Split Mountain Canyon which will bring us to the takeout. Enjoy a 30 minute trip back to Vernal. Our expected time of arrival back at our headquarters is 4:00 PM.
