River Currents Blog

River Currents is a blog open to many voices that have had a connection with the river and our trips. You’ll hear the voice of veteran river-runner and Holiday founder Dee Holladay, the voice of guides whose lives have been shaped by their time on the river, and guests who bring the perspectives that remind us why we’re still making these trips happen 45 plus years later. You’ll also hear from our regular blog contributors, Peta Owens-Liston, Joe Ballent, Derek Farr & Julie Trevelyan.

Bike/Raft Multi-Sport Combination Trips

Not sure if you want to bike or raft? Have your cake and eat it too! Over the past few years, Holiday River Expeditions has seen an increase of interest in our Multi-Sport Combination Trips. We offer a combined trip where the first part of the trip is a mountain biking adventure through red-rock desert and sub-alpine forest, and then launch the second half of the trip aboard our white water rafts and blast down the river.  Adventure Seekers love the variety of this type of wilderness vacation. It’s a “two-fer” if you will…

WHITE RIM BIKING/CATARACT CANYON RAFTING

Maybe John Denver was singing about the White Rim Trail on a bike when he sang “You Fill Up My Senses.” I don’t know, but this sixty-five mile trip in Canyonlands National park is perfection. Riding below Island in the Sky on down to the river bottom has become the standard against which all other mountain biking tours are judged. For two amazing days, the group will follow the beautiful White Rim trail as it meanders along the Green and Colorado Rivers. Then, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you climb aboard for two days of white water in legendary Cataract Canyon.

MOAB BIKING/WESTWATER RAFTING

For over a century, no one even knew about exquisite Moab, but today it is known the world over by expert and novice mountain bikers alike. This is the favorite destination of mountain bikers for so many reasons. The grandeur of the La Sal Mountain Range coupled with heart-thumping wilderness mountain biking brings visitors back year after year and has catapulted this region to fame. On Day Three the group will leave bikes behind and enjoy a world class white water adventure on the Colorado River through Westwater Canyon. Experience such thrilling rapids as Marble, Hunter’s, Staircase, Surprise, and Funnel Falls finally reaching one of the Colorado’s fiercest rapids, Skull Rapid. The exciting white water rafting trip ends with Bowling Alley, Sock-it-to-me, and Last Chance rapids. Prepare to get wet!

YAMPA BENCH BIKING/YAMPA RIVER RAFTING

This is a forty-six mile trip on remote dirt roads that winds through a mile wide sandstone bench between the Blue Mountains and the Yampa River Gorge. You will experience exhilarating sights and sounds as we roll along scenic canyon overlooks and through petrified sand dunes. On the morning of day three, the group will leave its mountain bikes behind and journey on down the Yampa River in white water rafts. This is a physical and fun challenge for the outdoor enthusiast.
